Why I wait for invitations...
One story of how my projector energy revealed how it's supposed to work
“You’re just going to wait and let someone else do the work?”
These words stung when I first heard them.
But I knew what I was doing. At least I thought I did—I was leaning into my Human Design energy type as a projector by waiting for the right invitation into a new living situation when my present one was a bit of a disaster with a nightmare roommate (actually, hold the “bit of”).
And this is not to say that I wasn’t doing my part! I was hunting on StreetEasy for a new room to rent and even visited several. I was asking friends for help, and I was posting on social media regularly since I direly needed out of that situation. I was doing my best to get my voice out there to find a new place to live as soon as possible.
But these words from a work colleague, who honestly knew me very little and vice versa, got to me for a minute. But, as someone a couple of years into my Human Design experiment, I did my best to remind myself:
The situation that will work out best is one that will come from an invitation that I feel good about. That’s how I will know it’s an aligned decision.
Because, as a projector, my energy type’s strategy for navigating the world is, “to wait for the invitation.” Which means first waiting for recognition and an invitation. Basically, I need to be seen and recognized to be invited in order to make aligned decisions.
I can’t hide away and expect to be found and invited into something. I have to shine my light and put myself out there by sharing what’s on my heart.
So, I made my situation as visible as I could.
And my strategy paid off…
A friend mentioned they had a friend looking for another roommate to fill out their new three-bedroom, and they had forwarded my FB post to said friend. And I waited. I waited for them to reach out, and they did. We met; I got to meet the two of them individually, and fireworks ran with each of them. I moved in at the end of that month, we were all able to cohabitate quite peacefully—a far cry from my previous situation.
There’s a reason that projectors have the “wait for an invitation” strategy. Our energy is incredibly penetrating, able to see to any situation or person so much so that if we don’t wait for an invitation to share what we see, our energy can be super intense and off-putting—and our insights fall on deaf ears. Like a know-it-all, bossy-pants kind of type.
Whereas when we wait for someone to recognize what we have to offer and invite us to share, the other person will be much more open to our insights… And this is because we are meant to be guides. Projectors of the guides of the Human Design energy types, meant to show the world a new way of being. But in order to guide, we need permission via some sort of invitation to share, otherwise, we waste our precious energy in sharing what’s not ready to be received. And that serves no one.
The same goes for entering new situations that involve other people… Like moving in this case, employment, relationships, etc.
So… I can’t be pushy. I have to wait. And that’s been really hard to adjust to when I grew up as someone raised in a society where initiative, going out, and doing is practically demanded and rewarded. (Other energy types are in alignment to behave in these ways, but I’m not.)
Now I have copious proof of how focusing on improving my craft, learning about topics that excite me (like Human Design, psych!), asking when I feel like sharing or helping out rather than automatically jumping in with the assist, waiting with plenty of fun and nourishment, and sharing what’s lighting me up in the moment… Can’t help but lead to aligned and enriching invitations that are mutually beneficial.
So, to this seemingly affronted colleague when I mentioned that I hoped my new living situation would be resolved through a referral from a friend—yes, I am going to wait to be invited into new things.
Because that’s what I’m supposed to do. And that’s how I, personally, find success.
Have you heard of Human Design? Do you know your energy type and how you’re meant to interact with the world?
I invite you to explore this if you feel inspired to… It’s changed my life to know how my energy naturally operates and given me a bigger permission slip to embrace the aspects of myself I thought I needed to change… but really, it’s all just me and it’s all okay.
