When I think back on 2023, one word keeps coming to mind:
nuance:
1: a subtle distinction or variation
2: a subtle quality
3: sensibility to, awareness of, or ability to express delicate shadings (as of meaning, feeling, or value)
2023 has reinforced how everything could use a more nuanced look. Viewing things from multiple perspectives to get the whole picture—or as much of the picture as possible—before making deductions about the truth.
You can’t just look at one side. One side is never the whole story.
What I’m seeing and sensing is that there is so much depth, layers, and wisdom that people are missing by viewing the world through a narrow, limited, one-size-fits-all kind of perspective.
The time for black-and-white, all-or-nothing, solely binary thinking is coming to a close. It’s time to start seeing the various shades of gray and in-between that dapple between all polarities. That it all coexists together, whether or not you take the time to look for it, either on the global scale or even within yourself.
It’s not all one thing or another. There’s not just one way of being. It’s not either/or.
It’s yes and (to pull out one of my improvisation lessons)… To accept the situation as is and recognize that it exists alongside its opposite or another contrary concept. And that there is always more that can be added, or taken away.
And there’s always more than what appears on just the surface or the news you choose to watch.
There’s a lot more to come on this, I think, but for now, my intuition is telling me to tell you this and leave it at that:
Nuance is critical to consider, now more than ever.
Across the board.
More compassion. More patience. More love. More listening.
More acceptance, especially of those who may appear different from us.
Because while we are all one—we all come from the same source—there’s a whole wide spectrum of how life expresses itself.
And how magical it is that we get to be in a time where so much is coming to the surface to be seen, felt, and understood.
All the shades of gray are coming out to play.
And there’s always more to the story…
Have a blessed week and a lovely holiday season, lovely.
